Learning English can be fun! With English Afloat you'll do a lot more than sit in a classroom studying grammar. The courses are aimed at people who can already communicate in English but who wish to improve their knowledge of the language and the country. No beginners please!

We teach in very small groups. A maximum of nine students are taught by two experienced and qualified Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

All courses start on a Sunday afternoon and finish on Saturday 2 weeks later. There are 18 teaching sessions of 90 minutes, and while one group is having lessons, the other students are driving the boat, working the locks, chatting or doing private study.

We visit various towns and villages along the way and there is plenty of time for sight-seeing and practising your English. We generally stop cruising at about 7pm and moor near a traditional English pub. Musical instruments are very welcome.

We provide a cooked breakfast, a light lunch and the main meal of the day is in the evening after mooring. The meals are prepared on board with fresh produce where available. Vegetarians are very welcome and special dietary requirements can usually be catered for – please mention when booking.

Trips which pass through Birmingham generally include the Black Country Living Museum and when in Stratford we see a Shakespeare play studied on the course.

Details of the routes, dates and price are displayed on the booking page.
